Halo Spot’s Stew – Grain-Free Turkey and Duck

You know how cranky and frustrated you feel when you’re on a diet? And all you dream about is what you’ll eat when you reach your target weight? But you also realize that after all that hard work and sacrifice, you’re kind of afraid to dream of delicious food because there’s nothing worse than backsliding right back to that undesirable higher weight? Well imagine how you would feel if you discovered that after you had done your time in “diet jail” that you actually had a scrumptious food waiting for you that was designed to keep that weight from coming back?!

If you were a dog with this problem you would be doing a real Snoopy Happy Dance because Halo has created a new food called Healthy Weight Grain-Free Turkey and Duck — it is made with simply delicious ingredients in a formula intended to help a dog lose weight, but also to eat as a maintenance food to keep those horrible pounds from packing on again!

The timing of this great new formula could not be better because my younger 6-year-old Weimaraner, Teddy, is down in the dumps these days because he is on a pretty strict diet as we try to get his weight down to what it was when he was two years old. Apparently that is the healthy target weight for a dog, as explained to me by Halo’s own Dr. Donna Spector, who is my delightful co-host on our show THE EXPERT VET on RadioPetLady.com. We discuss so many topics on the show, with one of the recurrent themes being the Take it Off Teddy! Project we’ve been on, trying to get a shocking 20 extra pounds off my beautiful boy. It’s a real challenge to get more than 20% of a dog’s weight off of him, yet as the pounds slip off week by week I have been worried how to get him back on his beloved Halo kibble without getting him chubby again. As if reading my mind, the good folks at Halo created this truly yummy new recipe and boy are we grateful and excited to see the smile on his face when he takes his first bites of this new food when we get him below 100 lbs. (believe it or not, he had ballooned up to 119.7! from 97.7 as a two-year-old).

Halo was able to keep their high nutritional standards in the new grain-free recipe and still use whole egg (not “egg product”), farm-raised vegetables, no rendered product or meals but a blend of real turkey and duck, no artificial color, flavor or preservatives and a balance of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids — all while keeping the protein at the same high 28% as the lamb, salmon and chicken Halo kibble he was eating previously — while reducing the kcal per cup from 430-35 in the previous recipes down to 358 kcal/cup. And if you want to see a mouth-watering ingredients list, check out exactly what is in there (and notice this food is so deluxe there is even some pheasant and quail in there, too!) It’s enough to make you want to put your pooch on a diet just for the pleasure of the dining experience!

Turkey liver, peas, turkey, ground peas, pea protein, potatoes, eggs, tomato pomace, vegetable broth, flaxseed, pea fiber, duck, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), pheasant, salmon oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols), quail, sweet potatoes, apples, green beans, carrots, alfalfa, blueberries, cranberries, zucchini.
